Integrated Science & Resources Intern

The Southeast Arizona Group (Chiricahua National Monument | Coronado National Memorial | Fort Bowie National Historic Site) is seeking an adventurous and technically savvy person to engage in all aspects of science and resource management for the National Park Service. This person should have a background in archaeology, history and an eager willingness to learn on the job. The applicant should be a flexible self-starter who enjoys working independently and doesn’t mind a work environment that can alternate between busy and boring. The position requires a reliable person with strong verbal and written communication skills, the ability to lead AND be a team member, a can-do attitude and a lot of common sense. This position is not for the faint of heart and people who don’t deal well with stress will not find it a good fit. There will to two - three interns selected per recruitment period.

The intern will assist the Science and Resource Management division with an assortment of natural and cultural projects, related activities, and data management functions. The field and preparation aspect of this position will occupy 40% of the applicant’s time, while office functions will occupy 60%. The intern must be physically fit and capable of hiking long distances over rugged terrain with a 35 pound backpack. 

Essential Job Functions:
·        Assist Resource professionals with an assortment of natural and cultural projects, related activities, and data management functions
·        Assist with field logistics
·        Assist with project planning and literature search, and field research
·        Perform routine condition assessments on a variety of resources
·        Assist with implementing erosion control measures
·        Assist with restoration and habitat recovery
·        Perform duties related to Integrated Pest Management for historic buildings and other facilities
·        Perform data collection with Trimble, Garmin or other GPS device
·        Manage GIS data collected in ESRI ArcMap and Garmin Map Source
·        Perform database entry in relevant systems
·        Prepare portions of annual reports
·        Regular and consistent communication with professional staff
·        Complete a multimedia product detailing project participation and objective learning
