ACE CRDIP: Archives Technician- Lake Mead National Recreation Area- AmeriCorps Eligible

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking an Archives Technician interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service at Lake Mead National Recreation Area in Boulder City, NV.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces undergraduate and graduate students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.

Location: Lake Mead National Recreation Area is located in Boulder City in the arid environment of Southern Nevada. Swim, boat, hike, cycle, camp and fish at America's first and largest national recreation area. With striking landscapes and brilliant blue waters, this year-round playground spreads across 1.5 million acres of mountains, canyons, valleys and two vast lakes. See the Hoover Dam from the waters of Lake Mead or Lake Mohave, or find solitude in one of the park's nine wilderness areas.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $455/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing is available at no cost to the ACE member and can range from an entire unit to a room in shared housing up to 45 minutes away from the office. The ACE member may opt to find their own more convenient housing in which case housing assistance, through reimbursement, can be provided to help offset that cost.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,311.11) upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment and volunteer service is required.

Position Description: The ACE member will receive a comprehensive experience working with archival collections and provide the rare opportunity to take a small archival collection through the entire process of archival collections management. Duties will include:
  • Archiving the Maps, Plans, and Drawings collection of the Lake Mead archives including preserving, processing, arranging, describing, and cataloging the collection
  • Humidification and flattening of historic maps, plans, and drawings and arranging the collection according to record type
  • Re-housing and cataloging objects for import into the Interior Collection Management System (ICMS)
  • Generating a finding aid for the collection

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Basic computer skills, especially the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to sit or engage in routine tasks for extended periods of time
  • Ability to occasionally lift objects up to 50 pounds
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements
  • Must be 18-30 years of age to apply

  • A personal vehicle for non work related tasks
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks

Preferred:
  • Experience working in archives, libraries, or museums
