ACE CRDIP: Cultural Resources Specialist- New River Gorge National Park- AmeriCorps Eligible

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the National Park Service is seeking a Cultural Resources Specialist interested in dedicating 11 weeks in support of the National Park Service at New River Gorge National River in Glen Jean, WV.
This excellent opportunity is ideal for an enthusiastic young professional who wants to gain knowledge and experience managing federal museum collections and learn more about a career as a National Park Service museum curator.

The Cultural Resources Diversity Internship Program (CRDIP) is a professional development internship that introduces undergraduate and graduate students, from backgrounds historically underrepresented in the National Parks, to career opportunities within Cultural Resource Management in the NPS. Applicants must be 18-30 (up to 35 for Veterans) and either A) in pursuit of a higher education degree or B) still be within two years of graduation from a degree program.

Location: The New River Gorge National River is located in the central Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia. A rugged, whitewater river flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park encompasses over 70,000 acres of land along the New River, is rich in cultural and natural history, and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities. Grocery stores, restaurants, and recreational opportunities are found in and around the nearby towns Oak Hill, Fayetteville, and Beckley, WV.

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute 40 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $455/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, paid bi-weekly.

Housing: Park housing is available at no cost to the member. The particular housing unit will include an individual room, common kitchen and bathroom facilities as well as parking. The member will be required to complete the standard housing office forms and strictly abide by social distancing protocols.

AmeriCorps: This position may be eligible for a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,342.86) upon successful completion of service hours. Additional enrollment and volunteer service is required.

Position Description: The ACE member will receive a well-rounded introduction to the park's archeology, history, Section 106 responsibilities, and gain knowledge and experience managing the park's federally administered museum collection. Duties will include:
  • Processing and cataloging accessioned and unaccessioned items and records into the Museum Collection Managements System (MCMS)
  • Organizing, accessioning and cataloging the park's diverse oral histories
  • Reviewing and analyzing data from environmental sensors in the museum storage facility
  • Maintaining the good condition of the museum collection and the cleanliness of their storage spaces
  • Assisting with the park's development of new exhibits in the Canyon Rim Visitor Center

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Basic word processing and spreadsheet competence
  • Ability to learn and apply the Museum Collection Managements System (MCMS) software
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements
  • Must be 21-30 years of age to apply (members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency vehicles for duties)
  • Military Veterans up to 35 are encouraged to apply
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request)
  • A personal vehicle for non work related tasks
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professionals within NPS
