These striking features are unified by the nearly 100-mile long monocline called the Waterpocket Fold. The spectacular geologic scenery and long cultural history of the area led Capitol Reef to be designated as a National Monument in 1937. Congress established Capitol Reef National Park in 1971 to preserve these features and their associated ecosystems, scenic and scientific values, wilderness character, and rich human history.
