Senior Environmental Engineer – Corrective Action (Environmental Engineer 5)

The Hazardous Waste and Toxics Reduction Program within the Department of Ecology is looking for a licensed professional engineer in our Southwest Regional Office in Lacey, WA.

As a professional engineer and a project manager, you will provide engineering expertise for the cleanup of complex sites, specifically those where contaminated soil or groundwater present a risk of vapor intrusion into building and facilities.

What will you do?

  • Ensure the cleanup of environmental contamination is effective, permanent and that people in the site’s buildings are not exposed to vapor intrusion.
  • Review sampling and analysis plans to make sure the data collected will be of sufficient quality to use in decision making.
  • Evaluate sampled soil from contaminated construction sites to determine if excavated soil can be disposed of at a regular landfill.

You'll use your engineering experience to evaluate data quality and make sound decisions about how to clean up contaminated soil and groundwater.

Please note: During Stay Home, Stay Healthy, staff are working a combination of in-office and/or telework based on position and business need. 
Ecology is maintaining less than maximum building occupancy, and requiring masks, health screening questions before entry, and social distancing.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree with major study in one of the following engineering fields; sanitary, water resource, civil, geotechnical, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field AND registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND five years of experience in environmental engineering. 
 
OR
 
A Master’s degree with a major study in one of the following engineering fields; sanitary, civil, geotechnical, water resource, environmental, chemical, mechanical, or related field AND registration as a professional engineer in the State of Washington or another state based on registration requirements equivalent to those in Washington AND four years of experience in environmental engineering. 
 
NOTE: A PhD in one of the above engineering fields will substitute for two years of the environmental engineering experience.

NOTE: Requirements for professional registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington are eight years of professional experience (which may include up to four years of college level engineering education) and successful completion of sixteen hours of professional licensing exams. Applicants qualifying through the licensing equivalency option must achieve registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington within six months of appointment to this class.

 
Desired Qualifications:
The most competitive candidates may have some or all of the below experience; not having some (or all) of these should not keep an otherwise qualified applicant from applying.

  • Experience working with environmental regulations. These could include the Model Toxics Control Act, CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Water Act, etc.
  • Experience building relationships with local, state, and federal officials.
  • Experience with budget or contract management.
  • Experience communicating complex scientific issues and concepts to a wide audiences. This could include presentations to non-technical staff, written documents for public use, etc. 

 
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment: 

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington.
  • Driver’s License
  • Initial 40-hour hazardous materials training followed by annual 8-hour refresher training is required and can be completed within six months of candidate hire.
