POSITION SUMMARY
The Forest Technician Intern provides valuable field support for the management of 75,000 acres of redwood forest. This job is primarily field work. This position will require the ability to safely travel and perform field tasks in variable weather condition, at remote locations, and in hazardous terrain. Overnight travel will be rare, if at all. The presumable start date is mid-June, but The Conservation Fund will accommodate the successful applicant’s school schedule. The position is temporary and not to exceed ten weeks.
GOAL
The goal of this internship is to introduce forestry to an aspiring forester or natural resource professional through on-the-ground training of various forestry tasks. The Forest Technician Intern will be exposed to some or all of the following job duties:
- Timber Cruising – measure established Continuous Forest Inventory Plots as a part of our annual forest inventory update.
- Timber Sale Layout – under the supervision of a Registered Professional Forester, identify and delineate harvest boundaries and stream buffers, identify and mark individual trees and small groups for harvest.
- Biological Surveys – participate in surveys or habitat assessments for northern spotted owls, red legged frogs, anadromous fish, and other species of interest.
- Silvicultural Projects – tree planting, brush clearing, weed removal, and other projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Interest in forestry, conservation, natural resources, fisheries, botany, biology, geology or related field.
- Ability to navigate and work safely in forested conditions and steep terrain.
- Motivated individual, eager to learn and contribute as opportunities arise.
- Strong work ethic and time management skills.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Driver’s license and clean driving record.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Enrolled at an accredited university as a student of forestry, natural resource management or related field. If enrolled, please provide proof of enrollment and a transcript.
- Conversational Spanish.
