ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST II (Hazardous Waste Inspector) – P0178
VRO - Valley Regional Office – Harrisonburg, VA
Minimum Starting Salary: $46,087 - Negotiable Based on Experience

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality seeks a qualified individual to perform inspections of municipal and industrial facilities which generate solid and/or hazardous wastes, conduct complaint investigations, and prepare and issue reports. This position provides compliance and technical assistance to responsible parties as needed, assists the general public with information requests, initiates and supports compliance and enforcement actions, and participates in special sampling events and studies.

Qualifications: 

·        Advanced knowledge of land protection and hazardous waste laws, regulations, and programs.
·        Knowledge and experience with pollution incident response and hazardous materials management
·        Knowledge and experience with incident command structure and hazardous materials spill containment, mitigation, and remediation.
·        Project management experience and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
·        Experience and knowledge of conducting multi-media investigations.
·        Strong personal computer operations including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.
·        Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively, both orally and in writing.
·        Ability to read, interpret, and properly apply policies, guidance, and regulations as well as evaluate technical documents
·        Ability to assess environmental impacts.
·        Must possess a valid driver’s license. 
·        Preferred – Experience and working knowledge of environmental engineering, waste chemistry, and waste sampling procedures, equipment, and analytical methods.
