Applied Anthropology Technician with Joshua Tree National Park

Working cooperatively with the National Park Service’s Joshua Tree National Park (JOTR), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting to hire one (1) Applied Anthropology Technician. The principal objective of this position is to implement activities focused on promoting cultural scientific research related to JOTR in the area of applied anthropology. Examples of needed assistance include: conducting oral history interviews to supplement the park’s Climbing History – Historic Resource Study, including preparation of all transcripts; conducting oral history interviews with park staff to document historic maintenance activities and park administrative histories, including preparation of all transcripts; contributing to Environmental Assessment (EA) preparation; assisting with EA “civic engagement” and “public scoping” efforts, specifically documenting, compiling, organizing, and tracking comments and responses; reviewing and coordinating reviews of EAs with subject matter experts; locating, acquiring, organizing, and cataloging historic photos, personal journals, and other archival materials; organizing and coordinating public lectures by researchers and experts; participating in the organization and coordination of public events with partner organizations and non-profit groups, including volunteer projects and/or service projects;
 
This position is expected to telework >95% of the time.
 
Location:
Joshua Tree National Park encompasses nearly 800,000 acres in southern California. Joshua Tree National Park is of special management concern, lying in the transition of the Mojave Desert and the Colorado Desert. Field conditions include hot, arid days with high exposure to the sun, as well as cold, winter weather. Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites.
 
Compensation:  
  • Rate of Pay: $21.00 per hour
  • Paid time off accumulation
 
Timeline:
  • 52-week appointment beginning May, 2021 (or upon on availability)
  • Part-time, 20 hours/week (some weekend and evening work may be required); potential for extension pending funding and favorable performance review
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Anthropology, Ethnography, Cultural Anthropology and field/research experience; applicants with advanced degrees are encouraged to apply;
  • Knowledge of applied anthropology methods and theories;
  • Ability to implement oral history projects, conduct oral history interviews, and produce transcripts;
  • Experience preparing transcripts for oral histories from interviews;
  • Capacity to collect and maintain data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resources staff (GBI or NPS);
  • Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license;
  • Ability to work productively and cooperatively as part of a team focused on accomplishing mutual goals and communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
  • Possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented; and
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, for highly complex and potentially controversial projects, and meet schedules and objectives.
