Summer Laborer - Temporary or Internship -Req 4145

Minnesota Power is looking for a motivated individual who is looking to work outdoors, provide excellent recreational opportunities to the public, and who wants to gain valuable experience in recreation, land management, sustainability, and environmental activities. This part-time position will consist of a combination of largely field work in summer and fall months, with a transition to office work in the winter months. Minnesota Power is flexible around school schedules and weekend opportunities.

Field work will be in support of recreation sites Minnesota Power owns throughout Ely, Duluth, Carlton, Grand Rapids, and Brainerd area. These activities are based out of the Hideaway Field office on Island Lake near Duluth. This aspect of the position is responsible for covering a large geographical area, and requires driving pick-up trucks, pulling trailers and navigating miles of shorelines in watercraft on Minnesota Power waterways. Office work will consist of supporting requirements for MP’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, DNR, and other local, state, and federal agencies. Research and compliance support for ALLETE’s compliance programs and sustainability initiatives will be accomplished through date compilation, assistance with regulatory filings, and research into various land, environmental, and sustainability requirements and programs. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs routine maintenance of Minnesota Power public recreation sites, service centers and provides labor/maintenance for other departmental projects
  • Routine activities include: lawn mowing/trimming, trash collecting and clean-up, operating motorized boats to remote reservoir recreation sites, grounds maintenance, trail clearing, driving with a trailer, and small engine maintenance and repairs
  • Perform job duties in physically demanding settings with uneven terrain and under extreme weather conditions
  • Project activities are variable, but generally involve operating power equipment and physical labor
  • Perform maintenance tasks in order to comply with company standards and provide aesthetic care to company owned properties
  • This position provides services to a large coverage area. Driving is a daily requirement during the field season and usually requires the towing of trailers or heavy loads
  • This position requires constant attention to customer service and safety
  • Office work will consist largely of data entry, regulatory and other online research, and filing of various documents.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Post Secondary classwork in environmental, engineering or natural resource disciplines is preferred
  • Enrollment in Post Secondary education is required to be eligible for internship status

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Landscaping or other grounds maintenance activities
  • Microsoft Office experience
  • Preferred experience with:
  • Outdoor recreational site maintenance, with small engine repair and maintenance
  • Boating
  • Towing with trailers

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have a valid Driver's License
  • Position subject to driver qualifications requirements (i.e. DOT drug screen and physical)
  • Must be willing to work weekends, holidays, and after hours
  • Must be able to lift 70 lbs. from floor to waist or shoulder
  • Motorized boat operation experience preferred
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.

DURATION:
  • Position duration through May 2022
  • This position is not to exceed 900 hours
  • Flexible work hours during the school year (up to 20 hours per week) and 40 hours per week, depending on variable needs in the summer
