Office and Location: The California Water Quality Control Board San Diego Region has an opening for a temporary Student Intern working the classification of a Student Assistant (will consider Graduate Student Assistant) in the Monitoring Assessment and Research Unit (MARU.) This position is located at 2375 Northside Drive, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92108-2700.

Duties: Under the close supervision and mentorship of a Senior Environmental Scientist in the Monitoring Assessment and Research Unit (MARU) the Intern working in the classification of Student Assistant, in a learning capacity, will assist staff with entry-level professional technical and administrative duties and, consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the State and Regional Board’s Strategic Plan, the incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal/external customers, follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal/external customer input when completing work assignments. Specific responsibilities include:
Work closely with Water Board staff to gain experience and learn the relevant laws, rules, regulations, processes, and procedures related to water quality management. In a learning capacity, assist Water Board staff in performing water quality research, analysis, and review of various technical and scientific reports.
Assist Water Board staff when conducting fieldwork and inspections, including for the monitoring of surface and ground waters. Assist with conducting water quality sampling and analysis.
Assist Water Board staff when conducting data review, analysis, mapping, and comparison to relevant water quality standards.
Assist Water Board staff with the preparation of project-related documents, including retrieving and entering relevant information into and from various databases and spreadsheets, community engagement, and searching for and cataloging reports and articles.
