Minimum Qualifications: Registration as a graduate student in a college or university of recognized standing. (Persons appointed during the summer months must produce evidence of eligibility for such registration in the following enrollment period.)

Location: The California Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Diego Region has an opening for a temporary Graduate Student Assistant in the Surface Waters Branch. The position is located in the Mission Valley community of San Diego at 2375 Northside Drive, San Diego, 92108, near light rail, freeways, and restaurants.


Duties: Work closely with Water Board staff to gain experience and learn the relevant laws, rules, regulations, processes, and procedures related to X. In a learning capacity, the incumbent will assist Water Board staff in performing water quality research, analysis, and review of various technical and scientific reports.
 
Assist staff in the Healthy Waters Branch to make effective public communication products for a variety of programs based on plain language principles relying on resources such as the State Water Board Office of Public Affairs, CalHR’s “Plain Language Style Guide,” and USEPA’s “Plain Language Guidelines,” assist program staff to outline and write documents for public outreach and communication.
Develop, in consultation with program staff, program-specific, plain language guidelines for program documents. Software will primarily be Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat and may also include web-based social media applications. Documents posted on-line must be accessible. Examples of topics and products include: Press releases and Executive Officer Reports of significant enforcement actions; public participation notices, website summaries, and social media announcements regarding Basin Plan amendment and Total Maximum Daily Load projects; Fact sheets and PowerPoint presentations describing annual and long-term water quality restoration priorities and results from water quality assessments; verbal presentations and briefings; and other public participation opportunities.
