Green Stormwater Infrastructure Technician

The Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Technician will work collaboratively with the GSI Coordinator and fellow GSI Technicians to facilitate activities under CRWC’s residential green infrastructure program. This position is overseen by the GSI Coordinator, and will consist of a mixture of office work and time in the field. The position will be responsible for portions of programming including site visits to residential properties, assisting with residential GSI installations, and technical follow-up support for program participants.  

The GSI Technician will be a part of the staff team at CRWC working to uphold the organization’s mission and will be expected to function as a collaborative team member, including occasionally contributing to team needs as they arise; production of high-quality work in a timely fashion; courteous, service-oriented behavior towards volunteers, partners, and coworkers at all times; and ability to work collaboratively with partners, colleagues and administrative staff.   

Primary duties will include: 

 Provide support to the organization’s green infrastructure programs  

  • Conducting site visits to residential properties to assess suitable GSI options, walking residents through their options and potential limitations of their property (underground utilities, distance from foundation, ordinances, etc.) 
  • Recording data in Survey123 for site conditions during visits, collecting information such as roof area, planned rain garden size, soil type, etc. 
  • Reviewing and finalizing summary reports for residents from data collected at site assessments. 
  • Assisting with resident questions and concerns as needed as they pertain to the RainSmart rebate program via email and by phone. 
  • Collaborating with other staff on plans for rain garden installations on residential properties. 
  • Assisting in the implementation of CRWC-contracted GSI projects on residential properties including several rain gardens, multiple rain barrels, and multiple tree plantings. 

 

REQUIRED SKILLS: 

  • A demonstrated and documented interest and experience in GSI, native plants, and/or sustainability practices. This can include working towards a BS degree in horticultural science, plant biology, natural resource management, environmental science or related field, or at least 1-2 years of relevant professional or volunteer experience. 
  • Familiarity with Michigan native plants, green stormwater infrastructure, or relevant rain gardening experience. 
  • Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills; proficiency in explaining concepts relating to stormwater and native plants to individuals of varying prior knowledge. 
  • Sense of tact, patience, and courtesy towards clients.  
  • Demonstrated ability to track and manage multiple tasks, must be skilled in planning and prioritization, and highly organized.  
  • Working familiarity with word processing, desktop publishing, spreadsheet and database programs.  
  • Must be a collaborative team member, willing to support the success of the broader CRWC team as needed.  
  • Must be dependable and capable of working all scheduled hours, including irregular hours at locations throughout Oakland County.   
  • Must have the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as be familiar with and observe all site safety protocols established by the project team. 

The following skills are preferred:  

  • Experience utilizing ESRI software (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro) and Survey123. 
  • Experience using tools such as sod cutters, rototiller, sod lifters, and other landscaping tools.

  • Project work will involve all-weather physical activity 
  • Work will involve moving soil and plant materials weighing up to 50 pounds 
  • Must maintain valid driver’s license

COMPENSATION: 

This position pays an hourly wage of $19.00 per hour. This is a grant-funded position. There are no guaranteed hours of employment. The grant is currently funded to cover up to 465 hours, which is subject to change, with a maximum term not to exceed the grant termination date. This position is part-time, seasonal, and at-will, pursuant to CRWC’s personnel policy. At-will means that either the GSI Technician or the employer may terminate employment for any time for any or no reason, with or without notice.
